What you need to know before buying essential oils

Buying essential oils may seem easy – just have a sniff, and your nose will guide you, or look up the benefits of the oil and match it to what you’re looking for.

That’s a good start. But what are the other factors to consider before making a choice?

buying, usage, storage

While it can be more cost effective to buy in bulk, and involves less packaging, this is one product category we definitely recommend you only buy in quantities you are likely to consume within 3 months. Essential oils are sensitive to temperature and humidity fluctuations, and are best kept in a cool place, away from direct sunlight in temperate climates.

The greater the headspace in your essential oil bottle, the faster it will deteriorate, so buying in smaller amounts makes sense.

Keep your essential oil and dropper away from any other ingredients that may contaminate the oil. Exposure to other ingredients will change the properties of the oil, likely accelerate ageing and may contribute to spoilage.

organic essential oils

Organic essential oils haven’t used toxic chemical extraction methods, and are the safest to use. There are some essential oils that can only be obtained through chemical or extraction using alcohol – it depends on the nature of the plant. The plant, method and process of extraction determines the quality of the oil obtained. We encourage you to look into the sourcing of your oils for better understanding of what you’re buying.

And, enjoy your oils! Essential oils can be used in so many different ways – in the air with a diffuser, diluted with carrier oils for use on the skin, to moisturise, relax and calm and nourish. You can include several drops in a bath to enjoy the healing and nourishing benefits through both the skin and the air, and a few drops, diluted and used on surfaces in the home can be very effective.
